My story

Is fish healthy to eat?

Ever since the beginning of times, people have learned how to be skilled hunters and fishermen in order to provide for their families. And, for a long period of time, fish remained among the few sources of meat for people, especially in coastal areas.

There are countless studies showing the true benefits of a fish-based diet so integrating it into your daily diet could prove extremely healthy in the long term. Here are some of the most popular health effects of fish on the human body.

It lowers the risk of heart diseases

Heart diseases and strokes represent the two most common causes of premature death worldwide but regularly consuming fish and fish-based products could change all that. According to reputed studies published in the American Journal of Cardiology, eating fish on a regular basis will lower the risk of heart diseases and improve blood circulation.

Fish is rich in nutrients and Omega-3 fatty acids that can reduce inflammation and protect your heart.

Improves memory and fights against neuronal conditions

Seafood should be consumed as often as possible as it can truly improve your neuronal activity and may prevent the early stages of certain diseases, including Alzheimer’s and dementia.

There are recent studies that support the theory that moderate consumption of fish and seafood will improve the grey matter in our brains, which reduces brain deterioration in time. A balanced diet based on fresh fruits, vegetables, natural oils, and fish could not only help you lose weight and become more attractive but also promote your body and brain health.

Moreover, other studies have shown that a diet rich in fish can lower the symptoms of depression. The substances contained in fish oils are known for their positive effects on the human brain and, when combined with several serotonin reuptake inhibitors (antidepressants) can fight this condition.

It is rich in vitamin D

Another positive aspect of a fish-based diet is getting increased quantities of vitamin D. This vitamin is crucial for calcium absorption in our bodies which delivers healthy and strong bones.

It also has a positive effect on our vision, improving it and fighting against premature signs of eye problems like cataract or fatigue.

Vitamin D will help you absorb calcium faster and better, meaning you’ll enjoy stronger bones and muscles, a healthy growth, strong teeth, and good eyes.

Are there any downsides?

Although there is no denial of the beneficial aspects of consuming fish, some people are concerned about it being dangerous to our health. The main reason is that fish usually devour everything they find in oceans and rivers, including toxic waste and other nasties.

And, because our waters have become extremely polluted and filled with contaminants that end up being food for fish, some fish species in certain areas may contain harmful heavy metals such as mercury or other things you may not like the fish meat to contain.
